Office Room
His hand on his head, Indu is pacing the office room worriedly – even murmuring a prayer or two in the hope that his wife would make it on time. Janardhan is tensed and so are the rest of the girls who’ve assembled there.
Just as the time is about to elapse and Mehek’s plea is being disregarded by Janardhan, Sanchi’s voice resonates from the corridor
‘One minute sir’
Hearing the echo of her words everyone in the room turns around to see her, joyous to know Sanchi had managed to make it in time. However, the one person who was probably the happiest for Sanchi’s timely luck was none other than Indu himself. Turning around, he lets out a genuinely happy smile as he catches his wife rushing into the office, gasping for air.
While Sanchi hurries to the clerk’s desk to sign the form, an anxious Guddu tries to instigate the professor against her – reminding him that the cut-off time had passed by. However, Janardhan defends his latest protegee stating that there were still 2 minutes left before the clock would strike 10.
Noticing that Sanchi had finished filling up the form, the professor then turns to wish her ‘Congrajulations Sanchi…your nomination form has been accepted…now along with Indu Singh, you stand to contest for the post of student leader’
While Guddu and the remaining friends are not entirely happy with the latest developments, Indu unwittingly erupts into a sportive smile.
No sooner than Janardhan leaves the office room, Indu walks up to the elated girl ‘Congrats Sanchi…’ he hands her a small boquet with earnest intentions ‘This is for you…’
Seeing that she was hesitant, he explains himself ‘Please take it…its for good luck…its good that you’ve filled up the form… if not, there’d have been no thrill in contesting the elections…’ while Sanchi looks on with a wary smile, Indu continues diplomatically ‘There’s no excitement without a challenge…especially if the opponent is strong’
He comes close to her and whispers mischievously ‘Besides, I’ll have great fun in fighting these elections against you’
Escalating the indifference in her manner, she beams him a sarcastic smile ‘Are you praising me or are you trying to hide your mistakes?’
The smile on his face vanishes, as she continues ‘You’d ruined my form Indu Singh…’
Indu becomes aghast by her latest implication. However, convinced by her assumptions Sanchi concludes with disdain ‘Probably fate didn’t want you to become the campus president this year’
Displeased by what he’d just heard, Indu complains aloud, as the bitter girl strides out of the room ‘Someone else commits the mistakes and I have to bear the brunt of it…even when I’ve done nothing I’m blamed for all of it…’ he vents out his frustrations unhappily ‘Anyway, its the time of elections…we’ll see what happens…’
University grounds
As soon as Sanchi steps into the grounds, the students approach the girl and question her as to why her mother had put forth such a bewildering request to them. Momentarily pondering on how to explain her situation to so many students, sanchi then decides to step up on the podium.
Addressing the large crowd, the girl admits ‘I am not here to canvass for votes.’
Munching on a Benarasi paan, Indu stands back and watches what his wife had to say, his friends surrounding him on all sides.
‘My mother also has the same dreams that other mothers have for their daughters.’ Sanchi concedes ‘That I should get married and settle down.’
Hearing her admission, Indu, Abhimanyu and the rest of the gang break out into bouts of mocking grins.
She continues ‘If everyone settles down, who will come forward to make changes to society.’ Indu’s playful smile starts waning at this point.
‘My mother fears that politics will ruin my character. Whatever happened to me in the last few days, has only unnerved her more…’ Indu becomes a shade more serious
‘I understand the reason behind her actions…my mother did what she thought was best for me…but sometimes parents misunderstand their children…just because I’ve taken a route, different to my mother’s ideal one, does’t mean I’m wrong…I want to fight this election for the sake of the university and I will not step down.’
Unwittingly nodding his head, the dazed Indu finds himself in accordance with all she’d expressed. Sanchi had concluded her statements, but Indu’s reaction had only begun – with the slightest hint of a smile erupting on his lips. If anything, his yearning to win the election was being steadily blurred by the growing respect and admiration he had for his wife. A few seconds of silence later, the rogue begins clapping his hands in appreciation of the speech. As the remaining audience and his confounded friends slowly join in, Indu encourages everyone to to show their praise for his partner.
Exhilarated by how her audience had grasped the reality behind her mother’s strange deeds, Sanchi gleams cheerfully till she catches Indu’s encouraging gestures in the crowd.
It then takes less than a moment for Sanchi’s elated smiles to revert to perplexed frowns.
Tiwari’s
Sadanand is irate at how his nomination-form ploy had backfired and admonishes the clerk who’d been allotted the vicious task. Sushil arrives at that precise moment and both brothers plan to carry out another plan to ensure their nephew won the elections.
Mathur’s
Tarachand and Veena have an argument of sorts. Tarachand scolds his wife in suppport of his daughter, while Veena shouts back, apprehensive of how society would view Sanchi once the elections came to an end.
University
The procedures for voting are ongoing. Sanchi is greeting her friends and the other girls in the campus, while Indu is having a gala time with his friends. He promises them ‘Ganga’ (alcohol) and parties once the election comes to an end.
Just then Sada and Sushil step into the grounds to visit Indu. Sada confesses to a distrustful Indu that he’d come to lend his support in the elections.
‘Why?’ Indu questions him ‘You’ve come here…but what will you do…what can you do…’
‘In case something untoward happens…we’ll take care of it’ Sada assures Indu
‘For the sake of your elections…I can do anything’ Sushil adds
‘Not anything…we have to do SOMETHING’ Sada corrects his brother
Hearing their words, Indu casts a thoughtful glare at Sanchi’s group. Alerted by his stares, Sanchi turns and watches Indu mingling with Sada. She has a nagging suspicion at the back of her mind, but thwarts her thoughts for the moment.
As most of the students had completed their voting, a student comes forward to invite Sanchi and Indu to cast their votes too. Just as both opponents are about to step forth towards the poll booth, Indu turns to Sanchi and indicates with his eyes, asking her to go ahead first. Following his cue, Sanchi walks away with her group of girls.
Watching her depart, Indu smiles at his own actions coyly and then advises the rest of his group ‘Come on…lets cast our priceless votes’
Stepping up to Sanchi’s strides, Indu keeps pace with the one girl who to him was his closest companion and yet starkest enemy. Authoritatively waving to a few supporters, Indu darts his girl a few glimpses, every now and then. Jointly walking through the corridors, Indu eventually takes his place in one queue while Sanchi takes hers in another.
Co-incidentally, with the two competitors taking adjacent positions in parallel queues, we get to see a few more challenging glances from both sides as Indu and Sanchi make their gradual way to the room.
Meanwhile, Sada and Sushil come up with a plan that they think would profit Indu’s cause. Signalling to Indu’s group, Sushil calls Yogi and lucky aside to enlighten them on their call of action.
In the interim, casting their votes at precisely the same time in adjoining booths, Indu and Sanchi spend a few moments exchanging ominous stares with one another. Thereafter, the two adversaries fold their yellow cards and dunk it into their respective vote boxes!
Outside, in the corridors, two boys start creating a deliberate brawl in the midst of the voting queues – basically, an attempt to distract the crowd. A simple argument of who nudged who, compounds into physical violence within a matter of seconds. Soon after, two assailants become four…then six… and then eight and the voting queues turn into a riotous backdrop.
Alarmed by the noises, Sanchi hastens out to investigate, closely followed by an equally intrigued Indu. Appalled by the uproar, Indu starts using his might and power to subdue the clashing fractions, while Sanchi endeavours to stop the agitation by personally interfering between two warring parties. The security guards and professors reach the scene too, adding to the confusion in the entire incident.
Meanwhile, Sushil, Yogi and Lucky take advantage of the distraction to steal the ballot boxes and exit through the back door.
At one point during the maddened anarchy, just as Indu attempts to prevent two boys from fighting each other, his attention is diverted to Sanchi. He observes his girl battling to hinder the fisticuff between two ruffians. Sensing trouble, Indu leaves all that he was embroiled in and rushes to Sanchi’s aide – well, he was just in time! Yielding to the heat of the moment, the bully was about to strike Sanchi. However, Indu manages to catch the assailant’s arm and gives him a resounding thud in return.
Just then the influx of a few more security guards manages to calm the situation down and the clamour eventually comes to a standstill.
Ensuring there were no more mobsters around him, an exasperated Indu turns to Sanchi. He fumes indignantly, his voice as loud as could be ‘Are you so fond of dying? Always want to act like Rani of Jhansi…what if something happened to you’
‘What is your problem…in fact that’s what you want, don’t you?’ Sanchi retorts
‘Oh yes… right…you are a clairvoyant..you can read whats in my mind…stop talking nonsense!’ He yells back
Once the hooligans are dragged away, Janardhan and the other professors try to restore some amount of normalcy in the proceedings. The crowd slowly falls back into their respective queues.
A short while later
Done with casting his vote, Indu is walking into the grounds, when he accidentally overhears Sushil, Yogi and Lucky discussing about how they had managed to steal the ballot boxes. The sordid truth seems to make Indu very tensed!
Staff room
The professors are worried about the elections – be it the violent incidents that just took place, the image of their campus or the outcome of the elections.
University grounds
Finally everyone, the time has come – the announcements start taking place!
*Drum roll*
1) Guddu has been nominated for one of the posts in the panel.
After the boys burst out into a boisterous round of howls, Indu cordially hugs Guddu. He wishes his friend, stating that the entire panel would be won by their group alone! It comes as no surprise that the girls are not too happy.
2) Then comes the next announcement, Mehek has won this seat in the panel!
The girls break out into rebellious cheers in support of their friend! Watching the girls’ reactions, the boys depict their half-hearted response by a few soft claps.
3) Then comes the next round and Rajjo chaturvedi has won a position too.
The boys are happy, the girls are not! Indu again hoists Rajjo and the group hoots and roars to parade another round of success!
Ultimately comes the time for the declaration of the post of president –
Now obviously, the thrill-factor has to be elongated as far as possible. Hence, the voting results are being broadcasted in stages
At first glance,
Sanchi – 70 votes
Indu – 100 votes
Sanchi is unhappy. Though Indu and his gang are revelling in the anticipation of their impending victory, Indu notices Sanchi’s expressions and gets drawn into deep thought.
Precap
The professor announces that Indu and Sanchi’s results were not too far from one another!
Sanchi 700 votes
Indu 800 votes
Sanchi is sad, Indu is anxious.
Sada is worried (probably by the narrow margin). He turns to Indu for an answer, who in turn signals him to calm down. However, Indu is quite anxious himself!
