Meet Apara Mehta – the sexy nani of Jamai Raja
Trust actor Apara Mehta to do roles that are different! She says, “I had always told myself I’ll never do a role where I am playing a granny with a chandan ki bindi and a white saree. So, at first, when I heard I was approached to play the role of the heroine Roshni’s maternal grandmother, I was not sure if I wanted to do it. But when Ashwini (Yardi) told me all about the character being young at heart and someone modern, contemporary and cool, I instantly found the role catchy.”
Zee TV’s latest primetime offering Jamai Raja is set in Cuffe Parade, one of the posh, upscale localities of South Mumbai. In stark contrast to a view that it is the bahus who are supposed to step in and bring warmth and harmony to a household, Jamai Raja breaks the convention and asks – If bahus have done it all along, why can’t the jamai? While the son-in-law, without a doubt, is accorded great importance in Indian culture, one rarely, if ever, speaks of his responsibilities towards the wife’s side of the family. But Jamai Raja begs to differ and has its male protagonist Siddharth proactively take on the task of setting right the discord between his wife Roshni and mother-in-law Durga Devi after marriage and filling their world with love and happiness!
With Ravi Dubey as the Jamai, the mother-in-law Durga Devi (DD) being played by veteran actress Achint Kaur and Nia Sharma as the wife Roshni, it had to be a stalwart actor to play the role of the uber cool Naani. The Naani is the only member of the household who can hold her own in front of her fiery daughter Durga Devi and gets along famously with her granddaughter Roshni. Nani prays every morning but is hip enough to sport cool salwar kameezes, tries nail art and visits the spa ever now and then. In fact, Roshni lovingly calls her ‘sexy!’
