AUGUST 15, 1947….THE DAY OF INDEPENDANCE, AFTER SEPARATION

THE BRITISHERS FREED INDIA, AND LEFT THE COUNTRY DECLARING INDIA FREE, ON 15TH AUGUST 1947, BUT THEY LEFT BEHIND THEMSELVES, HUGE WOUNDS, AND A SIGHT OF DESTRUCTION AND UNSPEAKABLE HORROR, WHEN THE TWO RELIGIONS THAT HAPPILY LIVED TOGETHER ON ONE LAND, SMILING AND EMBRACING THEIR DIFFERENCES, IN HARMONIOUS PEACE, WERE NOW AT WARRING ENDS. COUNTRIES SEPARATED, HUMANITY CHANGED, EVEN THE HEARTS OF PEOPLE DID. wITH A SINGLE STROKE, WITH THE FLAGS OF THE SEPARATE COUNTRIES FLYING HIGH IN THEIR OWN LAND, PAKISTAN AND INDIA, CIVIL STRIFE AND TURMOIL WAS AT ITS PEAK. INNUMERABLE LIVES WERE LOST IN THIS VERY COSTLY SEPARATION THAT TOOK A TOLL ON THE HINDUS AND THE MUSLIMS, WHO CLEAR PICTURE OF DATA IS STILL AMBIGUOUS. THE QUESTION LEFT FOR PONDERING IS WHETHER THIS WAS THE NEW DAWN THAT OUR POILITICIANS WERE BECKONING TO. tHE PARTITION STRIPPED SOME OF THEIR LIVES, AND THOSE WHO SURVIVED, LOST EVERYTHING ELSE, TURNING KINGS INTO PAUPERS. SOMEHOW THE GOVERNMENT MANAGED TO HASTILY SET UP REFUGEE CAMPS FOR THOSE WHO FLED LAHORE TO SEEK SHELTER IN AMRITSAR.

Scene 1:
Location: Refugee Camp, Amritsar and sunder’s residence, Lahore
Sikka and his friends throng the refugee camp, wherein people know about their true self too, and they face severe reprimands therein too. When they are denied food, sikka takes them aside and says that he has a wonderful idea of theft. he starts surfing through different camps, and finds eatables, chapati and food, and even so, they take the slippers away too. They accidentally fall into sunder’s camp, where he is still unconscious. Sikka’s friend’s feet accidentally comes across a pic, that is sunder’s pic with lajo. they are shocked, and then find the patient, who is sunder, still muttering lajo’s name in his dazed state. as he drinks water, and tries to regain consciousness, he finds the yellow dupatta, and remembers his last conversation with lajo, and how they got separated. he is shocked and distraught as he remembers it all. he starts looking around for lajo, and then goes for the search counter where the officer asks him to get in line. sunder gets berserk, and asks him not to brand her as dead. sikka composes him and takes him away. Sunder goes distraught and starts asking everyone, while sikka stands apalled at his pitiful plight. He is horribly devastated, as he continues to scream his name. he collapses on the floor, crying, as he remembers their last conversation, muttering that she had promised that he wont let go, then why did she. He cries incoherently.

Later, sunder remembers how he and lajo had eyed the dead bodies, apalled and aghast, and he had picked up Granny’s walking stick, removed the muslim cap from his head, and clutched at the stick tightly, and then commenting that all say, that a son is a father’s walking stick, and he must have missed him terribly in his dying breaths. he then goes to revathy, and grieves. lajo eyes the sweater that granny was making for the grandson of the house, and picks up the ball of wool, grievous and tormented, as she comes to granny. Then they cry together, as they perform the final rites, respectfully and with grace, so that their souls rest in peace. He is apalled as he remembers all this. Later, as he sits with sikka, he remembers dulari’s conversation with him, as he eyes the torn ends of the last rakhi that she tied, and how she was taken by the Muslims brutally. He is too grived and then eyes his pic with lajo, and then says that the hands that couldnt save lajo and his own sister, he would break them off, and starts banging his hands against the ground. sikka stops him saying, that if he breaks them off, then when lajo comes back, how would he hug him. he collapses into sikka’s arms, crying.

Scene 2:
Location: Sarfaraz’s residence, Lahore
Meher Jaan slaps sarfaraz and asks him where they haave been kept captive, referring to lajo and dulari, asking how could he stoop so low. she asks him not to forget that dulari is his sister, and lajo is his sister in law. He says that he wont tell her EVER, as they shall have to pay for the same insult that his mother was made to face due to their family, by losing their respect in front of everyone, and noone can stop him. She is tensed and shocked. She tells him that she was a prostitute even when she wasnt with keshav bharadwaj, and that he infact loved her, and gave her his name. She says that Bharadwaj family isnt responsible for her lifestyle in the brothel, and reminds him about his high opinion for lajo. He says that he cant bear the insult from people of his own religion, in the name of him being illegitimate child of the hindus. She says that she wont let him go, and asks him to tell where they are. he says that they are in heaven and noone can save them now, as he is writing their destiny, which the gods himself cant change. He leaves. she is apalled and begs the lord for mercy on dulari and lajo.

Scene 3:
Location: Undisclosed Location
As sarfaraz comes and eyes dulari, crying through tears, he remembers meher’s and narayan baba’s words. Dulari through the grills of the dungeon, where she has been kept, begs sarfaraz to be left and all others too. Sarrfaraz tells her that he shall leave her, but at the doorstep of the brothel, as the bidding of her untouched youth yet remains to be done. He says that what her uncle did with his mother, he would do the same to her. She is apalled and cries, as she is taken out of the dungeon with her hair, and walked out, while she is apalled. Meanwhile, lajo’s hands rise out of the dungeon, as she cries and screams to be saved. the screen freezes on the grieving hands.

Precap: the yellow dupatta flies, and is taken away, and lands finally on a woman, being taken on a stretcher covering her face. sunder is shocked to see this. he is happy thinking that he found lajo. He comes and stops the stretcher. the people taking it ask if he knows this person. he is abrim with excitement as he says that this is his lajo. he takes off the dupatta and lifts the dupatta off the face, and is shocked and left speechless..
