I am sure the real pros will recognize my talent: Rehman Khan
Stand-up comedian Rehman Khan is presently enjoying his stint in the Colors’ gag show Nautanki – The Comedy Theatre.
Talking about his experience being part of the show, Rehman said, “This 26 episode concept is different from other comedy offerings, in the sense that we have one skit which continues in the entire episode as opposed to multiple skits presented by each contestant in rival shows. Also there is no elimination in this concept. The judges Tusshar Kapoor and Neha Dhupia are acting as owners of a nautanki company, and the task given to us is to entertain them.”
The other contestants of the show include Gurpreet Huggi, Rashmi Desai, Kamya Punjabi and child wonder, Saloni Daini and many others. Rehman who has done several stand up shows over the years (Comedy Circus seasons 2 and 3, The Great Indian Laughter Challenge 3, Comedy Ka Maha Muqabala and Chhote Ustaad 201 to name a few) feels that, “Absence of elimination will help the other artists to concentrate better on the script. However, this should not be a problem for us veterans, as we always have a fixed eye on the script in any case.”
When asked whether Neha Dhupia has the caliber in her to judge comedy, Rehman quipped, “The format makes them more of a host than a judge. Rather than just passing comments, the judges will react. While it is the first experience for Neha, Tusshar has made a mark with comic films. All said and done, they are Bollywood stars.”
He also accepts that some of the humour today is below the belt, “But that happens even in cinema and SMS jokes, right! There is a demand for such jokes. What we can do is present it in such a way that kids don’t understand it while elders get it.”
Rehman asserted that, “I am not just a stand- up artist; I have been doing stage for the past 12 years as well.”
When asked whether he harbours acting dreams, Rehman went on to say, “After doing Papad Pol on SAB TV, I prefer to wait for the right role in cinema as I like to work on the detailing. This can’t happen in TV.” He also does not fear that his success in comedy will hamper his chances in other genres, “I am sure the real pros will recognize my talent,” averred the talented man.
We wish Rehman all the very best for his future.
