Ekta (Kapoor) is the only ‘piece’ in the industry who can handle both TV and films: Karan Johar

Producer–director Karan Johar had quite a busy month with his Bombay Talkies (director) and Gippy (producer) releasing earlier in the month. And now his all tied up with the promotion of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (producer) that released today (31 May 2013).

However…his endeavours don’t end here as he will be seen as one of the judges in Colors’ Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa season 6 (airs from tomorrow 1 June 2013).

“I feel really good to be back. I had a great time last year with Madhuri (Dixit) and Remo (Dsouza). Hence, I am glad that I was asked to judge the show again this year,” he avers.

As a matter of fact, the maker of YJHD has also used the Jhalak… platform to promote his flick, as he confesses, “When I learnt that Jhalak’s first episode will be aired on 1 June 2013, the first thought that struck me was ‘promotions’. Plus there was also this synergy with Remo having choreographed Badtameez Dil and Madhuri dancing with Ranbir on the Ghaghra number. I think Jhalak… has helped us.”

A lot of film producers have been producing TV shows, but has Johar any such plans. “I don’t think I can ever produce a TV show. In fact, I am so tired of fighting at the box office that I don’t think I have the energy to fight for TRPs. Matching box office expectations and making films according to the audiences’ likings are my responsibilities as a director- producer. But, I don’t understand the TRP business where characters are killed and a 20 year-leap is taken to get better numbers. I think I can’t do this. Since I don’t understand all this, I’d like to stay away from the TV domain,” Johar observes.

And when we suggested that the producer could learn the art of TV show making from good friend Ekta Kapoor, he exclaims, “Hats off to her. She is the only ‘piece’ in this industry who can handle both of it.”

Though Johar does not want to make a move into TV production, he has had a series of first things in his life as he tells us, “I don’t think there is a producer who has hosted a talk show or an awards show. Neither has any producer danced on a reality series. I am different from the rest and I think I must stay unique. (Pause) It is another matter that neither can I paint or sing, or I would have done that too. I think the next thing for me would be to do full-fledged acting in a film, though as a character and not as me.”

Are there plans in that direction? “Well, I won’t sign myself as I don’t have faith in me as an actor, but if another producer ropes me in his project, I would love to and after that probably I can rest in peace,” Johar informs.
