Madhvi is on her way to the well. I cannot see Bhima today. I had to discuss something with him. Dhansukhlal and other villagers happen to pass from there. Pundit ji and another guy tell her to turn her face away whenever she sees someone approaching. Has no one told you? Dhansukhlal rudely asks her to step aside. More people are coming this way. Madhvi complies sadly. She notice Bhima and Anand and is relieved. I wanted to say something to you. Anand takes them to a corner. Madhvi says you told me last night to think how I want to live my life. I have no work to do. Even Aayi Baba wont scold me as I cannot do anything now. No one allowed me to study earlier but now I want to. Bhima readily hands her a book. This is what I wanted to tell you too. Anand tells her to hide it for now or they will be in problem. She hides it in a piece of cloth. Go to school now. Bhima tells her to be friends with her book. Baba says everyone might leave your side but books will never leave you. She smiles. Bhima and Anand head to school. Madhvi holds the book close.
A villager tells Dhansukhlal what the people from lower community are up to. Mangesh says they are trying to create a shield for themselves. Dhansukhlal isn’t bothered. We will finish them at once at the right time. They cannot stand in front of us anyways! Dhruv tells Bala he is off to work. I will be back by evening. We will play music in the evening. Mangesh taunts him. Dhruv tells them not to come in front of him in the morning. It is a bad start of the day for me. Pundit ji says you are tyring to ruin dharma. Dhruv tells him not to lecture him. you better lecture this Mangesh as he spoils everyone’s mind. Mangesh warns him to be in his limits. He begins to threaten him but Dhansukhlal offers to talk sense to Dhruv. I will give you the money that you will earn by roaming around town in a day. Go inside. you may or may not agree but society will still call you my son. Everyone will mock us. I am giving you money to save ourselves. Take this and go inside. Dhruv asks him to throw the coins on the floor. That’s how people from my community get paid. Dhansukhlal fumes but complies. Pick it up now. Dhruv picks it up, adds a few more coins and gives it to Mangesh. I am paying you more money than the money that my father just tried to buy me with. Make tea for everyone but get the notion about the people of our community out of your head! Dhansukhlal questions him but Dhruv isn’t bothered. It is exactly what you tried to do just now. He leaves for work.
Madhvi comes home and hides her book. Her mother asks her when she will cook. Madhvi says I will make it at any time of the day as I can only eat once. Madhvi’s mother tells her to make it or die on an empty stomach but she wont make it for her ever again. She goes inside. Madhvi peeks inside to make sure she is alone and takes out her book. She thinks of Bhima’s words as she opens the book. I feel genuinely good today. It is true that turning your face in a different direction does open new doors for you. I found the other door. Maybe this will give me the chance to live a new life. Thank you, Bhima. I smiles while opening the book just as you told me to!
Bhima tells that widow what he did for Madhvi today. She compliments his actions and thoughts. Always remain like this. Most of the people of this society think ill of everyone only. A guy reprimands her for talking to kids from the lower community. She says I have no one else to talk to. He says you don’t have to talk to anyone. She rues that even he does not talk to her. Bhima asks the guy how he is talking to her. He says I can talk however I like. I am her son after all. Bhima says no one talks to his Aayi this way. The guy tries to scold Bhima but Bhima explains that Kaki needs you the most in this situation and you aren’t even willing to hear her out. He tries to hit Bhima but his mother stops him. Dare not touch him. I wish I had slapped you when you were a kid. you wouldn’t have been like this today then! Bhima might be from a different community but your mother is from your community. People don’t treat animals like this but you treat me worse. You make me feel like a widow every day. I wish I had died with your Baba as well. He asks her to go inside. a boy has a right to tell his mother how to behave when he grows up. Bhima tries to explain but he drags her inside. Guru ji stops Bhima. You don’t have to meddle in everyone’s business. Things wont change till the time the society tells people how to treat a mother who is also a widow. This is how a son will behave if he isn’t taught how to respect a mother and insult a widow! They leave for school.
Madhvi laughs as she reads the book. A lady hears her voice and looks in her direction curiously. Madhvi’s father comes out and asks her why she is laughing like a crazy. What are you doing? Madhvi absentmindedly tells him that she is a reading a book. It’s a nice story. Her mother panics. A widow cannot laugh. This is a sin! Madhvi says it is a natural emotion. How can one control it? It is created by God. How to stop it? Her father decides to put an end to her happiness. You met Bhima because of these books and you are back to reading it! I will set it on fire right away. A lady calls out to him. He tells his wife to burn that book and hurries outside. Madhvi requests her mother not to snatch the only happiness that she can possibly get as a widow. You have snatched everything else from me already. Don’t you want me to be happy again? I wont laugh outside or inside ever again. Her mother returns the book to her. hide it from your Baba though. Always remember that I do not have the permission to go against the society. It is my duty and compulsion to make you follow your dharma as a widow. I will try to give you any little happiness that I can as your mother. You can go through a lot worse if people find out what you are doing. Madhvi says what can be worse than this. She goes to her corner. The other lady decides to make Madhvi’s life hell.
Bhima is thinking about Madhvi and Kaki. Guru ji notices him sitting alone in a corner. You sit quietly in a corner during breaks. What do you keep thinking? Bhima says I was thinking that Kaki’s son wouldn’t have behaved like this with Kaki if he had gone to school. Schools help us find a new meaning of life. Didi cannot go to school but she can still make her life better by studying. Guru ji agrees. we can always clear out the darkness of our life with the help of education. Bhima nods. There is darkness all around Didi. She needs this light.
That lady tells everyone about Madhvi. Word spreads like wildfire and all the villagers gather outside Madhvi’s house to demand an answer.
