Chhanchhan starts off with a ‘decent’ TRP of 1.4

The last year had not been good for Sony Entertainment Television’s fiction shows. None of their recently launched properties e rocked the TRP charts either.

Sony TV roped in the immensely popular Sanaya Irani to essay the role of the bubbly, outspoken modern bahu Chhanchhan in its recently launched show
Chhanchhan (Optimystix Entertainment). Nevertheless, the opening TRP is just 1.4.

Despite Sony TV being a channel which caters to urban India the concept of a modern bahu isn’t making a mercurial impact. It seems that the viewers preferred the more demure avatar of Sanaya who they saw in Star Plus’ Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?.

It is a sweet show though which is cheerful and light. It’s a refreshing break from the rona dona saas bahu shows. The cute dogs add a new complexion show and is a treat for animal lovers.

Chhanchhan which is at the 9pm slot is facing tough competition from Diya Aur Baati Hum on Star Plus and also Pavitra Rishta on Zee TV. Hongey Judaa Na Hum, the show that Chhanchhan replaced was clocking a TRP of 0.4 just before it was taken off air. Chhanchhan is surely doing better than Hongey Judaa Na Hum, but to hike Sony TV’s GRPs it needs to deliver better. The broadcaster is currently at the fourth position on week 13 of TAM Ratings.

Producer Vipul Shah is optimistic nevertheless. He said, “It is a good start though I expected the opening TRP to be around 1.9. I am confident though that we will really produce the big numbers post the IPL. A simple story well told always works. My characters always have grey shades. Plus I am very lucky to have been blessed with a great cast. The chemistry between Sanya Irani and Supirya Pathak is mind blowing. I also feel that that the added element of the female protagonist being a dog trainer and a lead actress like Sanaya essaying the role has added freshness to the mix. Rather than just judging the performance of the serial simply by its opening numbers, we should keep in mind that the Chhanchhan has generated very positive vibes.”

When asked if the 9pm time slot was a challenging one for the show, Vipul replied, “Any time slot may be challenging. At 7.30pm Saraswatichandra on Star Plus is aired and at 8.30pm we have the highly popular Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah on SAB TV.”

A source who did not want to be named said that these numbers are very good for a challenging platform like Sony TV. We also got to know that a channel honcho was expecting a TRP between 1.2 and 1.4. We may thereby infer that the channel must be quite happy with the opening TRP.
