POLICE STATION
Just as the entire group are on their way out, the policeman stops them. He reads out the name of a few of them who’d forgotten to sign their respective papers – including Sanchi and Mehek. The nervous Sanchi and Mehek step forward and sign as directed, before leaving the station.
OUTSIDE THE STATION
The four friends stand beside Mehek’s car delving on the recent set of interrogations. Anxious, Mehek hopes her handwriting should not be identified. However, Indu is not perturbed. Stylishly chomping on his paan, Indu assures her that he was quite adept at escaping the police’s clutches. As she’d understood his indications and acted upon them, she needn’t worry!
Just then Sobha comes and rebukes Manwa for whiling away his time and getting trapped in such wayward issues. Dragging him by his ear, the infuriated mother leads the helpless son from the place.
Ignoring Sobha’s outburst, the remaining three members then decide to get along with their next plan of action – i.e. hiding the money they’d received during the blackmail. However; unbeknown to them, Sada was keeping a close watch on their whereabouts and following them too!
POLICE STATION
The handwriting expert scours through the bunch of papers he had in hand – comparing the letters and styles in the test sheets to the ‘original’ ransom letter in his other hand. He finally concludes that none of the handwriting samples matched perfectly with the one written down in the ransom letter. Hearing the results, Balram is frustrated – the case seemed to get increasingly bewildering.
INDU’S DEN
Indu, Sanchi and Mehek walk towards their den in order to hide the money they’d retrieved from Sadanand. Keeping a close yet safe distance from the group, the lawyer also follows them. Once the group enter their room and lock it from inside, Sadanand decides to peep in through the window to get a glimpse of what the mysterious pair were up to. Needless to say, he is in for a shock when he catches his nephew handling his precious leather briefcase and his money!
Oblivious to the presence of his uncle at the window, Indu opens the briefcase and indicates towards the stash of money ‘This money will return to where it’d come from!’ Saying so, the determined man starts stuffing the bundle of notes into his pockets.
Once he’d stuffed all the bundles in, he resolves to get rid of the leather briefcase too.
Stepping away from the window, the startled Sadanand mulls upon what he’d just come across and tries to come to terms with the fact that the entire scheme was Indu’s and Sanchi’s. No wonder after kidnapping Rubina, they’d asked for the property papers too! He decides to avenge the agony they’d caused him as a result of all this.
POLICE STATION
While Balram is pondering on how to proceed with the case, the hand writing expert makes a casual mention of how all the papers were written by right handed people bar one – i.e. Mehek’s. He hands over the sheet to the inspector for him to have a look too. The inspector surveys the sheet with Mehek’s signature at the bottom. He suddenly has a flash recollection while doing so – when Mehek had signed her name before leaving, she’d done so with her right hand. Then why was her sheet written left-handed? His curiosity is piqued.
The shrewd inspector then comes up with an idea. He asks the expert to compare Mehek’s signature at the bottom of the sample sheet with the lettering on the original ransom note. Once having done so as instructed, the expert confirms that Mehek’s ‘right-handed’ signature did indeed match with the handwriting style of the blackmail letter. He goes into the details of his examinations and assumptions, while Balram simultaneously compares the notes.
No sooner than his suspicions are confirmed, Balram is certain the foursome were up to no good. He instantly asks his assistant to issue an arrest warrant in the name of Indu Singh, Sanchi Mahur, Mehek Chauhan and Abhimanyu Panda. Soon after, the assistant scampers away to do as told.
ON THEIR WAY HOME…
On their way home, Indu Singh steps out of his car on a deserted street and dumps the empty leather briefcase into an abandoned dustbin. Making a few sceptical glances around, the man then returns to his car and the group speed off. Barely two seconds later, Sadanand approaches the dustbin and fishes his leather briefcase out of the bin. Surveying his briefcase, the man contemplates upon his ploy and then makes a quick call to Shukla.
UNIVERSITY
At university, a storm is being raised. A crowd of students assemble outside Janardhan’s room to investigate the reason for the clamour coming from within. All thanks to Shukla, who was busy screaming his voice hoarse as he openly blamed Janardhan for sweeping the issue of Rubina’s death under the rug! He challenges Janardhan to bring the issue out into the public, escpecially with accused being students from their very own university. However, Janardhan is exasperated – he tries to calm Shukla down reminding him that the reputation of the college depended on the matter.
Watching Janardhan’s composed approach to the news, Shukla is livid. When he’d committed fraud in the past, his deeds were dragged out in the open for all to see. Then why was this issue being hushed up? He warns Janardhan that if he didn’t cough up the truth in front of the students soon enough, he’d do the honours instead!
MATHURS’ – The living room
When Indu and Sanchi step into their living room, they’re greeted by the enraged expressions on the faces of their parents and a very sarcastic Sadanand.
When Sanchi politely asks them why they were being stared at in such fashion, the lawyer wastes no time. Bringing out the evidence, he parades the briefcase in front of their eyes. The cornered pair are in for the horror of their lives as they see the case dangling in his hands. While Indu and Sanchi endure an agonizing spell of guilt, Sadanand recaps on how he’d salvaged the briefcase from an abandoned dustbin. Realizing that they were indeed trapped and had no way out, Sanchi’s eyes start welling up as she listens to the lawyer’s spiteful words.
‘I might not be able to say anything about the murder…’ Sadanand announces proudly ‘But I can now state with sureity that it is these two that have been involved in kidnapping Rubina!’
A shaken Indu and Sanchi stand back speechlessly – not knowing what to say or how to put across their defence.
‘Ask your daughter what she was up to in his den…’ the lawyer queries the parents and then turns back to view the sullen faces of Indu and Sanchi ‘Ask her what necessity arose that they had to bury this briefcase in a dustbin…tell me…what have you done with my 10 lakhs?’
While the remaining members in the living room are appalled by the unanticipated developments, Sadanand goes on to interrogate the pair ‘Why did you kidnap Rubina…why… I’m certain that with further investigation, we’d find out that they had a hand in her murder too!’
Pained to hear the words coming out of his mouth, Sanchi and Indu stare on in anguish, while Veena and Tarachand find themselves increasingly tormented by Sanchi’s silence.
Eventually, Indu struggles to find a voice and comes up with a meek retaliation. However, Sadanand did have the upper hand this time. Apart from solid proof, Sanchi’s face was a dead giveaway!
‘You knew all about my affair with Rubina beforehand didn’t you?’ he yells at the subdued girl ‘You wanted to blackmail me… and you wanted to extort money from me, didn’t you…’
Utilizing the opportunity he had, he even begins taunting the desperate parents.
Watching their grief, Sanchi ultimately comes out of her shell and runs to her mother ‘Ma…please don’t believe all of this…I had no hand in her death…you only know half the truth…listen to what I have to say’
Nevertheless, the helpless girl’s pleas are only returned by a tight slap from her mother.
The colour drained from her face, Veena replies in sorrow ‘I knew you’d been hiding something from me… I asked you to tell me the truth… and every time you only told me lies…’ the miserable mother looks away – her pain too much to handle ‘I cannot even imagine that my daughter can kidnap someone or have someone murdered…I’ve listened to everything you’ve told me till date…but I never thought you’d have no regard for our upbringing or culture…you’ve finished everything!’
A saddened Indu watches the entire conversation in silence, as the mother and daughter try and deal with their grievances.
Squatting next to her heartbroken mother, Sanchi speaks up tearfully ‘I know I’ve committed a mistake…however…ma…you only know half the truth…’
‘Shut up!’ veena yells back amidst her sobs ‘I don’t want to hear anything any more…I feel ashamed even calling you my daughter’
Just then, Indu finds himself unable to stand back silently. He steps forth to try and resolve the issue, but is curtly stopped his father-in-law. Holding his crutch as a barrier, Tarachand rebukes the young brute animatedly ‘YOU! You’re the one responsible for corrupting my daughter… ever since you’ve entered my daughter’s life, she’s always faced grief…you’ve ruined her happy carefree life…poisoned her existence…’
Sanchi witnesses the scene in tears, as Indu continues to remain humbled. Too ashamed to justify himself, Indu only looks down with a grim expression as he quietly accepts the father’s despair ‘The very daughter I used to be proud of has embarassed me today…you’re the one who’s dragged her into all this…’ the father angrily shoves the tall man by his shoulders ‘You’re responsible for all this..YOU ARE!’
Running to her father, she defends Indu ‘This is not his fault…its mine… in a bid to attain the property papers, I got lured into doing all this…’
The wailing girl then goes on to inform everyone about what they’d intended to do and how all their plans had eventually gone awry. Falling at her father’s feet, she concludes her statements with a tearful confession ‘But we’ve not murdered Rubina papa…we’ve not murdered her…’
Possibly for the first time in his life, the angered father spurns his daughter away. Nudging her away from his feet, he admits angrily ‘Don’t call me ‘papa’…how proud I used to be of you…you’ve broken me today…you’ve broken me…’
Indu stares ruefully as the father scorns his crestfallen daughter – the daughter who used to be the apple of this father’s eye!
Precap
Tarachand wants Sanchi to surrender to the police. However Indu is trying to convince the father that they had no other go but to abscond from the police.
