The Pandey flat
Sobha is doing her rounds of her modest apartment complex to collect the rent money. Unfortunately, she finds out that her flat had been abruptly deserted with no prior notice! She panics, as they party had left without even paying her the rent they owed her. The irate lady vows to hunt them down (they live right next door now!) and avenge this malicious behaviour of the Tiwaris!
Mathur’s – the kitchen
Radha strides into the Mathur kitchen and makes a few snide remarks on both, Veena’s menu and the amount being prepared
‘If we are staying here, it goes without saying that we’ll be eating here too’ Radha hints slyly
Hurtling an angry glare in Radha’s direction, Veena replies that they didn’t have servants who’d be willingly obeying their culinary whims and wishes.
Sanchi steps up to support her mother ‘If you want to eat…make your own food and eat it’
Saying so, both Sanchi and her mother leave the Tiwari ladies behind in the kitchen. Annoyed by their rebuttals, Radha vows to get back at them for having treated her so.
Sometime later, a jovial Sadanand steps into the kitchen with a packet of chicken he’d just purchased for his wife – Radha had obviously instructed him to do so. Watching what they intended to do, the noble Anita mentions her apprehensions about cooking non vegetarian dishes in a vegetarian household. However, the timid wife gets told off by her older sister-in-law with harsh words.
Just then, Veena and Sanchi step into the kitchen purely by chance and see them handling the chicken there. Needless to say, Veena gets hysterical. She hollers loudly that they were a conservative traditional family that did not consume non vegetarian dishes. She warns them to have the chicken removed from there at once.
Barely perturbed by the threats, Radha replies nonchalantly ‘We’ll make whatever we want to here… we are Indu’s relatives and this house is Indu’s as much as it your’s…do you understand that?’
The lady then directs her threats to the silent girl standing behind her mother ‘You are Indu’s wife and I’m his mami…so I am like your mother-in-law now…learn to respect me…if you don’t do this, do you even realize what will happen to you…’
Not wanting to cave in to their unjustified intimidations, the rebellious Sanchi decides to do something about their harassment. Noticings the gas cyliner at one corner, she comes up with an idea and paces up to it. After struggling for a few moments, Sanchi manages to pull the regulator off the cylinder hose and shows it to them ‘Now lets see how you cook non vegetarian here’
Sada and Radha watch the retaliative act in dismay. However, being the vicious couple that they were, require little effort to turn the tide in their favour once again. Beginning to sob aloud, Radha starts accusing Sanchi of torturing and humiliating her and calls out to Indu for support. Hearing the loud wails from the kicthen, Indu rushes inside and attempts to comfort his tearful mami (ahem) comfortingly.
Radha provides Indu a skewed update of what had just transpired, while Indu listens on patiently, happy to support them in their act.
Once he comprehended the gist of the problem, Indu walks up to Sanchi to try and put across his point ‘What’s this Sanchi ji? You’ve made my mami cry… why this insolence…your family is allowed to eat and enjoy whatever they like..but, not mine?’
Wholly aware that the Tiwaris were availing pure joy out of their plight, Sanchi grits her teeth, as she corrects Indu ‘Listen… I did not say that she could not cook here…only mentioned that non-vegetarian should not be cooked here…’ she raises her tone ‘There is no place for anyone in this house who wants to eat non-veg!’
Indu becomes agitated ‘No place in this house?’ he walks around the massive room ‘You have a kitchen the size of a bedroom and you say there’s no place in this house for us?’
Returning to face his wife, Indu cautions her with a sarcastic smile on his lips ‘Listen to one thing I have to say…I am your husband and these people are my family.. as long as I stay here, you better treat them with respect… you have to ensure that they are tended to and well fed…’
While Veena becomes increasingly annoyed, the Tiwaris derive cruel pleasure out of all that was transpiring.
‘This is not my responsibility…’ Sanchi retorts sternly ‘This is torture and I am not going to endure your family’s torture any more!’
His temper rising, Indu shouts back ‘Why, you won’t? Have you forgotten?’ he picks up a bunch of spinach from the kitchen counter, bites it and spits it off ‘I told you before hand, I’m a carnivore… I do not eat grass and leaves…I hunt my prey down and gorge on it…as long as I stay here I will follow my lifestyle…see if you can stop me…’
Concluding his outburst, Indu glares at her menacingly.
A moment later, he shouts out to summon his friend Guddu. A series of yells later, Guddu arrives at the kitchen to join the leader.
Grabbing him by his shoulder, Indu asks him ‘What’s that round object you use in a gas cylinder?’
Guddu stutters ‘Re-fr-ig-er-a-tor?’
Sanchi corrects them ‘Regulator!’
‘Please run along and fetch me one right now’ Indu instructs his friend. No sooner than Guddu leaves to follow his bidding, Indu turns back to Sanchi ‘Today… in this house…in this kitchen… on this stove…chicken shall be made…if you can challenge me…do so…’
Refusing to be pressurized by the brute’s torments, Sanchi snaps back ‘Then even I’ll show you what I am capable of’
Watching her storm out of the kitchen, an ectstatic Indu reminds her ‘Fine.. try your best…because the fragrance of what I’m about to have prepared will overpower the entire house’
Once Sanchi leaves, he turns back to his uncle ‘Don’t worry…its your house…your kitchen…do as you please…’
While the boisterous Indu and Tiwari decide to step out to arrange for some alcohol to accompany the chicken, Radha and Veena end up havng a brief altercation of words. Watching all of it, a displeased Anita finds herself standing alone, unable to do anything.
Tarachand’s Bedroom
While Veena nags Tarachand about how she was finding it impossible to deal with the tyrants, an irate Tarachand reveals the bitter truth that the lawyer had just told him about – as long as the court had permitted Indu to stay there, he was allowed to house and entertain his own relatives too!
Balcony
Indu is enjoying the company of his friends in the balcony, when Guddu pops up the question that was irking many-an-audience’s mind! The loyal friend asks him why he’d strung his mama along in the plan too ‘You knew what he’d done to you, then why have you invited them here…and why are you allowing him to stay here?’
Leaning on the terrace wall, Indu lets out a wry grin. He straightens himself ‘Who’d know my mama better than I do…I’ve only called them over to harass Sanchi…only to get back at her…and who better to trouble her than my mama and mami?’ (I was in fits here!)
A confident Indu continues, his tone reeking of sarcasm ‘You people give her the utmost respect in the college campus… while here – at home, I’ll take care of her…’ He snaps his fingers authoritatively ‘Whoever has won whichever position or seat in these elections, make FULL use of it…’
While the boys dutifully nod their head in accordance, the spiteful young man continues ‘Don’t allow her to achieve anything in the campus…Sanchi, you’ve only seen my goodness so far, my love…my affection…my obsession with you…now, you’ll see my hatred too…how much effort I can invest into love, that much effort I can invest into enmity too!’
Suddenly realizing he was being absorbed into the quagmire of his personal vendettas yet again, Indu snaps out and smiles heartily ‘Boys.. now its better you leave..if not… she’ll come here armed and angry…and your lives will be in trouble’
Indu then deftly puts on a Sanchi accent, miming the girl and amusing the boys ‘She’d say – Indu Singh, court has granted you permission to stay here… not your friends…papa…let’s call the police…’
The boys break out into a bout of raucous laughs, before deciding to leave the place.
Sanchi’s Bedroom – kitchen
It’s 4:30 am and sanchi finds herself unable to sleep. Twisting and turning in bed, Sanchi recollects the judge’s haunting words and then recalls how Indu had warned her about living his life king size at their expense.
Her sordid thoughts are interrupted when she hears some noise coming from the kitchen. She walks up to the kitchen to find Anita working there.
When questioned, Anita divulges that she was trying to help sanchi and her family, as she did not like how Radha and Tiwari were constantly troubling them. Since she was not allowed to help the Mathur’s during the daytime, Anita decided to do her bit at night when everyone else was asleep. She wasn’t brave enough to stand up against the Tiwari’s, but could support Veena with household tasks when she could. Sanchi is immensely moved by the goodness in her and compliments her benevolence.
Soon after, Anita also shockingly proceeds to reveal another trutho ‘The Tiwaris are bad…but Indu is not so…he may appear gruff…but is actually not bad at heart…the Tiwaris are ruining his life and corrupting him… if possible, please forgive him too!’
Sanchi does not know what to say and looks down. Just then the loud blaring noise of rock music echoes through the entire house. Taking less than a second to guess the culprit, Sanchi argues with Anita ‘And this is the person you want me to forgive?’ saying so, she hurriedly exits the kitchen to investigate.
While the whole house was being awakened by Indu’s antics, an enraged Sanchi advices her father that she would put an end to his latest bout of barbarism.
Indu’s room
While the audience are in for a delectable visual treat in the form of a topless robust Indu doing his push-ups, flexing his muscles and exercising dumbells, Sanchi steps into his room to confront him.
His back facing her, the frustrated Sanchi notices the man carrying out his exercise routine and rushes to switch off his stereo in defiance. Wholly engrossed in his physical pursuit, Indu’s attention is disturbed when his music comes to an abrupt halt. Knowing all too well who was responsible for it, the incensed man turns around.
Sweating and heaving profusely he is about to defy her, when he becomes distracted by Sanchi’s expressions.
Studying his chiselled topless form for the first time, the embarassed girl looks away. She waits for a few moments, hinting that he could dress himself in privacy.
Though momentarily perplexed by the awkward situation he was in, Indu swiftly picks up his black vest and begins scolding her ‘Are you blind? Can’t you see I’m exercising here..why have you switched off the music? What’s your problem?’
Noticing that he was now just behind her, Sanchi ensures he was clothed before turning around to face him once again. She resumes her scornful form ‘You’re the one who’s become blind? Blasting the music so loudly early in the morning…’
‘It’s my wish how loud I want to hear it…’ Indu retaliates ‘If you don’t want to listen to it..close your ears…but, I’ll listen to it everyday…’
He switches on the music again and glares at her. She stares back at him and then switches it off, unafraid.
‘What enmity do you have with my stereo set? he says, as he turns it on again.
Ultimately, Sanchi decides to end it once and for all – she plugs off the set and then breaks it by dropping it on the ground.
Oh la la – Indu is infuriated!
‘Remember that you’ve challenegd Sanchi Mathur, Indu Singh!’ she states, as she exits the room
‘You should also remember that you’ve challenged Indu Singh, Sanchi …I’ll raise a storm in your life…and fill it with darkness…’ he dares her, wiping the sweat off his brow
Precap
Indu is busy gulping down some food on his bed. Watching him, Sanchi lets her mother know that she doesn’t mind going to college hungry ‘Let them have their breakfast ma… they’re probably used to stealing other people’s food and having it…like dogs do…what can be said…they don’t do their own work – in fact, they can’t do anything…you see their hands and legs don’t function!’
Sanchi storms out of Indu’s room
‘I can’t do anything? I’ll show you what I can do Sanchi…’ Indu fumes, as he munches on his meal
